On October 6, 2019, nine-year-old Brooke Roberts vanished alongside her parents, John Roberts and Julie Englehart, from Hesperia, California. The family had recently returned to Hesperia after living in Ozark, Alabama, since 2017. Upon their return, they resided at a Motel 6 on Cataba Road during September and early October . The last known contact was a phone call Julie made to a relative, stating she had found a job cleaning used trailers in the High Desert area and that the family was moving to a location near Spring Valley Lake.
