Torry Durrell, a 53-year-old from Kihei, Hawaii, was last seen on January 24, 2012, when he left early in the morning for a solo kayaking trip. Around 2:00 a.m., Durrell contacted a co-worker, mentioning that he couldn’t sleep and was heading out to kayak. Later that morning, around 8:15 a.m., two paddle-boarders encountered him about a mile offshore between Kihei and Maalea. He was sitting on his kayak, watching breaching whales nearby.
