On August 1, 2018, 28-year-old Samantha Sayers, an avid and experienced hiker, embarked on a solo day hike to Vesper Peak in Washington's Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. She was a familiar face on this particular trail, having completed the difficult, five-mile route several times before. Other hikers saw her on the trail that day, and one individual reported having lunch with her near the summit. She was last seen descending the south side of the peak, a different direction from the path back to her car. Samantha had planned to contact her boyfriend by 6 p.m. to let him know she was heading home. When she failed to make that call, her boyfriend grew concerned, drove to the trailhead, and found her car in the parking lot. After a brief and unsuccessful search on his own, he contacted authorities in the early hours of August 2nd, initiating what would become a massive search effort. The official search for Samantha Sayers was one of the largest in the history of Snohomish County, involving an extensive mobilization of resources. Over a period of three weeks, search and rescue teams, along with numerous volunteers, dedicated more than 8,000 hours to combing the rugged terrain of Vesper Peak and its surroundings. The comprehensive operation utilized helicopters, drones, and at least 14 search dog teams. Ground crews covered a vast area of challenging landscape, including steep inclines and dense wilderness. Despite the exhaustive efforts of multiple agencies and dedicated volunteers, no trace of Samantha was ever found. The official search was suspended after all leads and tips had been thoroughly investigated. Following the suspension of the official search, Samantha's boyfriend, family, and a dedicated group of volunteers continued the search efforts privately. Her boyfriend remained on the mountain for an extended period, scouring the area for any sign of her. The use of drones continued, with footage being shared online for volunteers to help analyze. The mysterious nature of her disappearance, especially given her hiking experience and familiarity with the trail, has left her loved ones and the community with unanswered questions. The case remains an active missing person investigation, a painful and unresolved chapter for all who know and love Samantha Sayers.
