On April 30, 2017, 34-year-old Keir Shante Johnson and her 8-month-old daughter, Chloe, vanished from Hampton, Virginia. Keir had informed her mother of her plans to spend the day at Buckroe Beach with Chloe and a friend. However, they never arrived for the planned outing, and all attempts to contact Keir were unsuccessful. This was highly uncharacteristic of Keir, who had no history of leaving without informing her loved ones. The family's concern grew, and they reported both mother and daughter missing the following day. At the time of her disappearance, Keir was described as a Black female, 4'11" tall, and weighing 140 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. The investigation into their disappearance began immediately, and about two weeks later, on May 14, Keir's black 2013 Kia Optima was discovered abandoned in a trailer park in Newport News, Virginia. Despite a thorough search of the vehicle and the surrounding area, there was no sign of Keir or Chloe. The discovery of the car in a different city prompted the Hampton Police to transfer the case to the Newport News Police Department. An AMBER Alert was issued on May 11, but it was canceled a week later. For years, the case remained cold, leaving Keir's family, including her twin sister, in a state of prolonged anguish. A significant development in the case came in February 2025, when authorities arrested Keir's ex-boyfriend and Chloe's father, Carlos Johnson Jr. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their disappearances. Court documents revealed that in the months leading up to their disappearance, Carlos had conducted internet searches for disturbing topics such as "how much rat poison is needed to kill a human" and "accidental baby deaths." It was also reported that he had been refusing to pay child support and had expressed that he did not want to be a part of Chloe's life. Although Keir and Chloe's bodies have not been found, prosecutors are proceeding with the "no body" case against Carlos Johnson Jr. The investigation has been a collaborative effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, who have compiled extensive evidence. The family continues to hope for justice and closure.
