In late 2003, Kimberly Michelle Ratushniak, a 25-year-old Indigenous woman from Nanaimo, British Columbia, embarked on a journey to New York with aspirations of finding work as a nurse. She arrived in New York City on November 21, 2003, flying into John F. Kennedy International Airport. Shortly after her arrival, she contacted her mother, reassuring her that she was safe and staying at a 'Nurses Quarters' on Long Island, a location that has remained unidentified.
