In the summer of 2002, a sense of quiet concern settled over the community of Ferndale, Washington, following the disappearance of a local resident. Mark Jay Hess, a 46-year-old man, vanished on July 8, 2002. He was last seen by his parents at his home in Ferndale. At the time of his disappearance, Hess was unemployed. For years, his case remained a painful mystery for his family and the local authorities who had worked on it since he was reported missing. The absence of answers left a void, and the passage of time did little to ease the uncertainty surrounding what had happened to him. The investigation into Mark Hess's disappearance continued for years, though it eventually became a cold case. A significant breakthrough finally came two decades after he was last seen. On November 21, 2022, city workers were conducting a routine levee inspection along the Nooksack River in Ferndale when they made a somber discovery. They found what appeared to be human remains partially buried in the sandy riverbank near the 5500 block of Ferndale Road. The Ferndale Police Department was immediately notified and, with assistance from the Whatcom County Medical Examiner's Office and the Bellingham Police Department, carefully recovered the remains. A handgun was also found with the remains. Investigators at the time estimated the remains had been there since the early 2000s. It would take nearly two more years for the remains to be formally identified. The delay was attributed in part to a backlog at labs capable of extracting a viable DNA sample from the aged remains. Finally, in November 2024, the Whatcom County Medical Examiner confirmed through DNA testing that the remains were those of Mark Jay Hess. After twenty-two years of uncertainty, the family of Mark Hess received the devastating confirmation that their loved one was deceased. The discovery brought a close to the long-standing missing person case, though the investigation into his death remains open pending a final report from the medical examiner. This tragic resolution provided a degree of closure, yet it also marked the final, heartbreaking chapter in the two-decade-long search for Mark Hess.
