In the spring of 1996, 54-year-old Traudl Koenig was preparing for a significant life change, a move to Alaska with her husband. On April 25, 1996, she was seen for the last time in Port Orchard, Washington. The following day, she and her 58-year-old husband, Donald, departed from the Port Orchard Marina aboard their 30-foot sailboat, the Adventuress. The couple, who lived in Bellevue, were sailing towards Juneau, where Donald was relocating for his job with Allstate. They were described as avid sailors with about six years of experience, and their vessel was equipped with a satellite navigation system, a radio, and a cellular telephone for their journey. As the days turned into weeks, a sense of unease began to grow for the couple's daughter, Stephanie Koenig. Traudl had promised to call her regularly during the voyage, but no calls came. The worry intensified when her mother did not arrive for a scheduled meeting at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on May 19. Stephanie's fear that something was wrong prompted her to alert authorities, turning her Tacoma apartment into a command center for the search for her parents. She spent countless hours on the phone with officials, trying to piece together what might have happened after the Adventuress left the marina. An extensive search was launched, covering an immense 100,000 square mile area of the Pacific Ocean, but it yielded no sign of Traudl, Donald, or their sailboat. Investigations revealed that the Koenigs had planned to take a route to the west of Vancouver Island. This path is a shorter, more direct route to Alaska but exposes a vessel to the unpredictable conditions of the open ocean. According to a U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant at the time, the Adventuress was not constructed for an open-ocean voyage. The weather in the week following their departure was reported as mostly clear, with only occasional rain showers. Despite the massive search and investigation, no trace of the Koenigs or their boat was ever found. The official belief is that they were involved in a boating accident in the Pacific Ocean. The disappearance of Traudl and Donald Koenig remains a sorrowful mystery, a story of a journey to a new life that ended without a trace, leaving their loved ones with unanswered questions.
