In the quiet community of Scottsville, Virginia, 49-year-old Janet Renee Field, who often went by her middle name Renee, lived a reclusive life with her husband, Lewis. Described by those who knew her as intelligent, kind, and deeply private, Janet kept to herself on the 22-acre property she shared with her husband. She wasn't involved in community activities or church and didn't maintain a presence on social media. Her primary connection to the outside world was through regular, weekly phone calls with her parents. On July 2, 2014, following what was described as a "minor" argument with her husband, Janet drove away from her Hickory Hill Drive home in her burgundy 2010 Subaru Forester. This would be the last time she was reportedly seen. The evening after Janet's departure, her husband, Lewis, grew concerned when she didn't return and contacted her parents to see if she was with them. After learning she wasn't there, he reported her missing to the Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office the following morning. Two days later, on July 4, 2014, Janet's Subaru was discovered abandoned at a Park & Ride commuter lot in Zion's Crossroads, approximately 20 miles from her home. Inside the vehicle, investigators found her purse, keys, and cell phone. However, her driver's license, cash, and credit cards were missing from her wallet. This discovery intensified the investigation into her sudden and uncharacteristic disappearance. The investigation into Janet's disappearance was met with immediate challenges due to her private lifestyle. Law enforcement conducted extensive searches of the area surrounding the Park & Ride, employing bloodhounds and cadaver dogs, but found no trace of her. A search of her home also yielded no clues to her whereabouts. Investigators have noted the lack of significant leads throughout the years and consider her disappearance to be suspicious. While they have interviewed her husband in-depth, no suspects or persons of interest have been officially named. The case has grown cold over time, leaving her family, including her father, without answers. The Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office continues to implore the public for any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, that could help bring closure to the enduring mystery of what happened to Janet Renee Field.
