In the vast and wild expanse of Mount Rainier National Park in Washington, a brilliant and experienced 22-year-old hiker named Zachary Weston disappeared in August 2005. An MIT student studying both aerospace engineering and film, Zachary was spending the summer exploring the park, a place he loved. He had been hiking and camping in the area for about seven weeks, sometimes with his father or friends, but was hiking alone when he vanished. He was expected to meet a friend on August 11, 2005, but he never arrived, prompting a search when his car was found at the Comet Falls trailhead. The last verifiable sighting of him was on August 10, 2005. Zachary was known to be a skilled and expert outdoorsman who was well-prepared for his hiking excursions. However, it is believed he did not have the appropriate gear for glacier travel. The initial search focused on the rugged, unmaintained trail leading toward Camp Hazard, an area with rocky cliffs and glaciers. Search crews found his camp at the Snow Lake Campsite, indicating he had made it that far into his journey. Despite extensive search efforts by park rangers and volunteers, which included helicopters scouring the steep terrain up to 10,000 feet, no trace of Zachary was found. The mystery of Zachary's disappearance has endured for years, a painful void for his family and friends who remember him as a gifted and goal-oriented young man. In a poignant discovery years later, his father, while on his own search, found a cache of his son's food and equipment, including his sleeping bag and backpack, in a small alcove. This find, however, did not lead to solving the case. The official search was eventually suspended, and Zachary was presumed to have perished on the mountain. The case remains an unsettling mystery, highlighting the unforgiving nature of the wilderness and the profound sorrow of a promising life cut short. His disappearance is one of many that have occurred in the beautiful but dangerous landscape of Mount Rainier National Park.
