On a November morning in 1983, 20-year-old Richard William Miller Jr., known to his loved ones as "Petie," was driving to his job in Staunton, Virginia. His father was in a separate vehicle on the same road, Route 254. At some point, his father noticed that Richard's 1968 gold Chevrolet pickup truck was no longer behind him. He turned back to see Richard's truck pulled over on the side of the road behind another pickup. Believing his son had stopped to help a stranded motorist, his father continued on his way, unaware that this would be the last time Richard was ever seen. At the time of his disappearance, Richard was described as a white male, 5'7" tall, and weighing 120 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a red shirt, dark blue work pants, a blue jacket, and brown dress boots. The circumstances surrounding Richard's disappearance grew more mysterious when his pickup truck was discovered abandoned in Richmond, Virginia, on December 14, 1983. The vehicle had reportedly been parked in the same spot for three to four weeks and had been wiped clean of any fingerprints or evidence. A few months later, Richard's family received an anonymous typed letter claiming that he was alive, working, and had chosen to cut ties with them. However, his family did not believe this, as it was completely out of character for him. The investigation took a significant turn when it was revealed that the man Richard had stopped to help on the side of the road was his fiancée's stepfather, Charles Lindberg Almond. It was also discovered that Richard had recently confronted Almond, accusing him of sexually abusing his fiancée, which had led to an argument between the two men. For many years, the case went cold, despite law enforcement's suspicions of foul play. Over the years, several searches and excavations were conducted based on various tips, but they yielded no results. A major breakthrough finally came in May 2015, when a grand jury was convened to compel uncooperative witnesses to testify, leading to the indictment of 84-year-old Charles Almond for Richard's murder. During Almond's trial in March 2016, numerous witnesses, including his own son and stepdaughter, testified that he had confessed to them that he had shot Richard, dismembered his body, and disposed of it in acid. Based on this testimony, Charles Almond was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. He died in custody in 2020. Despite the conviction, Richard William Miller Jr.'s body has never been recovered, leaving his family with a painful lack of closure in this tragic and long-unsolved case.
