On a chilly morning in Flint, Michigan, on November 21, 1958, seven-year-old Adele Marie Wells stayed home from Jefferson Elementary School with a slight cold. By late morning, feeling better, the second-grader decided to attend her afternoon classes. Before heading to school, she stopped at her grandmother's house, which was just a few blocks away, to show off how her mother had nicely styled her hair.
