In the winter of 2013, a 30-year-old experienced skydiver named Kurt Edward Ruppert vanished into the rugged terrain near North Bend, Washington. On January 3rd, the Florida native was with two friends, taking turns making jumps from a privately owned helicopter. Ruppert, an accomplished jumper with approximately 1,000 jumps to his name, was wearing a brown winged skydiving suit, a black helmet, and clear goggles. He ascended in the helicopter for his turn, and at an altitude of about 6,500 feet, he exited the aircraft to begin his sky-dive. Tragically, he was never seen again. His friends, waiting for him at the designated landing zone, never saw him emerge from the sky, and the helicopter pilot did not witness his parachute deploy. An extensive search and rescue operation was launched immediately. Over the course of four days, more than one hundred personnel, including teams from Everett, Olympia, and Tacoma, combed through the challenging landscape of Mount Si. The search area was vast, estimated to be at least five square miles, due to the nature of wingsuit flying which allows for significant lateral movement. Initial efforts were hampered by deep snow and windy conditions. Searchers focused on various areas, including the old and new Mount Si trails and the Teneriffe cut-off. New information based on radar and cell phone data led teams to an area below the main trail, but the search of that location yielded no clues. The terrain on Mount Si is notoriously difficult and, in some places, inaccessible without specialized mountaineering gear. Despite the exhaustive efforts of numerous volunteers and search and rescue teams, no trace of Kurt Ruppert was ever found. The search was officially suspended after several days due to the hazardous conditions and the decreasing probability of finding him alive. The brown and green colors of his wingsuit would have made him difficult to spot against the foliage of the heavily forested mountain. The case remains a sorrowful mystery, a story of a passionate skydiver who embarked on a jump and disappeared into the vast and unforgiving wilderness of the Cascade Mountains, leaving behind unanswered questions and a family and friends still waiting for answers. The official search may be over, but the memory of Kurt Ruppert and the questions surrounding his final flight endure.
