In the early winter of 1996, concern grew for a 28-year-old man from Spokane, Washington, named Shawn T. Rice. He was last seen on November 18, 1996, a day that would mark the beginning of a years-long mystery for his family and investigators. Shawn, a White male with brown hair and blue eyes, was reportedly in a suicidal state of mind around the time of his disappearance. His last known whereabouts were in the vicinity of Chattaroy, a community in Spokane County, during a severe ice storm that hampered initial search efforts. The investigation into Shawn's disappearance began when he was reported missing to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office. A significant early discovery in the case was the location of his vehicle, a 1978 burgundy or maroon Oldsmobile sedan. The car was found abandoned in the same Chattaroy area where he was last thought to be, intensifying worries about his well-being. Despite this lead, the search for Shawn proved incredibly difficult. The severe weather conditions at the time were so extreme that search and rescue operations had to be called off, leaving few immediate avenues to follow. For years, the case remained cold, with no new information about what happened to Shawn Rice. It wasn't until the summer of 2002 that a grim discovery brought a partial resolution to the search. On August 15, 2002, a human skull was found in the Little Spokane River. Through forensic investigation, authorities were eventually able to positively identify the skull as belonging to Shawn T. Rice. This discovery confirmed that his life had tragically ended, though the exact circumstances remain unknown. To this day, the remainder of his body has not been recovered. The case began as a search for a missing man in distress, was complicated by severe weather, and remained without answers for nearly six years until a chance discovery provided a devastating but definitive update for his loved ones.
