In the late summer of 2012, 37-year-old Kathleen Haley was living a quiet and private life in her second-floor apartment in the 2800 block of West Avenue in Newport News, Virginia. On September 1st of that year, she spoke with her sister on the phone, making plans to come over for dinner later that evening, and mentioning she had other plans for later that night as well. That phone call would be the last time her family ever heard from her. Kathleen, known as "Kathy" to her loved ones, never showed up for dinner and all subsequent attempts to contact her went unanswered. Described as a private person, it wasn't entirely unusual for her to go a few days without being in touch, but as the days turned into a week with no word, her family's concern grew into alarm, and on September 7, 2012, they reported her missing to the Newport News Police Department. Upon entering Kathleen's apartment to conduct a welfare check, investigators were immediately confronted with a disturbing scene that suggested foul play was involved in her disappearance. The box spring and mattress were later found near a dumpster outside the apartment complex. Kathleen's car was found unlocked in the apartment parking lot, which her family stated was out of character for her, and the driver's seat was pushed all the way back, indicating someone much taller than the petite 5-foot-tall woman had last driven it. A witness reported seeing an unidentified man with blond hair entering and leaving Kathleen's apartment with a key on September 4th, three days after she was last heard from. This same man was seen carrying something rolled up, possibly bedding, to the dumpster. Police released a composite sketch of this individual, but he has never been identified. At the time she went missing, Kathleen was working as a dancer at a local club called Headlights. She had a boyfriend, but he had moved to Germany about a month prior to her disappearance. Despite the suspicious circumstances surrounding her case, no arrests have ever been made, and no persons of interest have been publicly named. Since she vanished, there has been no activity on her cell phone, bank accounts, or credit cards. The case of Kathleen Haley is a haunting one, leaving her family with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss. The evidence left behind in her apartment paints a grim picture of her last moments, and the identity of the man seen at her home remains a central mystery.
