In the late summer of 2012, a sense of unease began to settle over a community in Leesburg, Virginia, as a 36-year-old mother named Leyla McCullagh seemingly vanished. A native of Russia and a belly dancer, Leyla was last seen at her residence on Evergreen Mills Road on August 14, 2012. Her estranged husband, Matthew Ryan McCullagh, was reportedly the last person to see her. In the days that followed, Leyla, who had a four-year-old child, failed to show up for work, and her friends and colleagues grew increasingly concerned when they couldn't get in touch with her. This was out of character, as those who knew her said she would never have willingly abandoned her child. It wasn't until August 30th, more than two weeks after she was last seen, that an official missing person report was filed by detectives after receiving multiple calls from her concerned friends and coworkers. The investigation into Leyla's disappearance soon uncovered a turbulent and troubled domestic life. Just four months prior to her vanishing, in April 2012, Leyla had been charged with domestic assault against her husband following a dispute over alleged infidelity. She pleaded guilty and was given probation with a mandate to attend counseling, but she disappeared before she could follow up with the court system. However, friends and others told investigators a different story, one where Leyla was the victim of abuse. They reported seeing bruises on her arms before she went missing and claimed she had told them that Matthew had assaulted her and threatened to have her deported. The day she disappeared, her cell phone pinged a tower located several hours south of her home before it went silent permanently. There has been no activity on her phone or any of her credit or debit cards since that day. As the search for Leyla continued, suspicion began to fall on her estranged husband. Investigators executed a search warrant on Matthew McCullagh's apartment in Herndon, where they seized a significant amount of firearms and ammunition. During the search, Matthew attempted to hide an illegal .45 caliber Thompson submachine gun in his girlfriend's car, later asking a friend to hold onto it. This weapon was eventually turned over to the authorities, and in May 2013, Matthew was arrested on federal weapons charges, though he was never charged in connection with his wife's disappearance. Despite the lack of charges against anyone, law enforcement has stated that foul play is suspected in Leyla's case, which has been internally classified as a suspected homicide. The case eventually went cold, leaving her family and community without answers for over a decade. The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office continues to seek information from the public, holding out hope that one day the truth of what happened to Leyla McCullagh will be brought to light.
