In the fall of 2011, Dana Lynn Turner, a 43-year-old woman from Chesapeake, Virginia, was navigating a period of significant personal and financial stress. She was going through a divorce, had recently lost her job, and her unemployment benefits had ended. On September 22, 2011, she spoke with her sister on the telephone, a conversation that would be their last contact. Dana had told her family she was traveling to North Carolina for a three-day job cleaning model homes and was expected to return on the 22nd. When she failed to come back as planned and could not be reached, her worried sister and mother reported her missing to the Chesapeake Police Department on September 23rd. The circumstances surrounding Dana's disappearance were immediately concerning and unusual. Her own vehicle was found in the parking lot of an Avis Rental Car agency on Battlefield Boulevard North. A Honda Accord that she had recently rented was also returned to the same location, but not by her. An unknown individual had dropped the car off after business hours, leaving the key in the drop box. The rental car was found to be dirty and the fuel tank was nearly empty, conditions that were very uncharacteristic for Dana, who was known to be meticulous. The discovery of both her personal and rental cars at the same location, with the rental returned in a state so contrary to her habits, created a perplexing scene for investigators. As the investigation deepened, unsettling details began to emerge. Friends revealed that Dana might have been involved in transporting marijuana between cities like New York and Atlanta to the Chesapeake area, suggesting her disappearance could be connected to drug-related activities. A person of interest was identified: Gene "Bones" Morris II, a man with a prior manslaughter conviction whom Dana knew through home repair work. Morris claimed he had dropped Dana off in Chesapeake on the day she was expected to return from her supposed job in North Carolina. A search of his apartment uncovered some of Dana's belongings, including clothing and medication, as well as traces of her blood. Before he could be charged in her case, Morris took his own life in his jail cell in February 2012 while being held on unrelated burglary charges. Another individual later claimed Morris had confessed to murdering Dana. Although foul play is strongly suspected, Dana's body has never been found, and no one has been charged in her disappearance. In 2012, her mother had her declared legally dead to manage her affairs. The case remains an unsolved mystery, a collection of disturbing clues that begins with a final phone call and ends with unanswered questions about what happened to Dana Turner.
