In the coastal city of Newport News, Virginia, the disappearance of 60-year-old Vereley Loriel Banks in June of 2011 left her loved ones and the community with lingering questions and a deep sense of concern. At the time, she was a resident of the Hilton Plaza Assisted Living Facility located on Main Street. Described as a Black female with black hair and brown eyes, standing between 4'11" and 5'2" tall, her sudden absence sparked an immediate search and a plea for public assistance. She was known to suffer from mental health disorders and required medication, adding to the urgency of her case. The circumstances leading to Vereley's disappearance began to unfold on June 8, 2011, when she was seen leaving the assisted living facility on foot. An employee of Hilton Plaza observed her walking southbound on Jefferson Avenue and attempted to persuade her to return, but Vereley continued on her way, ignoring the staff member's plea. The following morning, on June 9, 2011, at approximately 6:00 a.m., another employee spotted her at the intersection of 18th Street and Roanoke Avenue. A second attempt to redirect her back to the facility was also unsuccessful. Vereley was last seen wearing a blue sweat suit, though another report mentions a black shirt and black and white pants. In the weeks and months that followed, the search for Vereley continued. There were several potential but unconfirmed sightings of her along Warwick Boulevard, particularly in the vicinity of Christopher Newport University. Despite these leads, she has not been definitively seen or heard from since that early morning in June. The Newport News Police Department took on the investigation, and her case was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs). The case of Vereley Banks remains an open and unresolved matter, a poignant reminder of a vulnerable member of the community who vanished without a trace, leaving a void in the lives of those who knew her.
