On a late March evening in 2010, 64-year-old John Alan Bradshaw disappeared into the dark, cold waters of Lake Washington. He was last seen near Kirkland, a city on the lake's eastern shore, in King County, Washington. The initial understanding of that night's events pointed to a tragic boating accident. The narrative suggested that Bradshaw, a man with graying hair, blue eyes, and a tall frame, was with another person when their boat began to fill with water while crossing the lake. For months, this was the accepted, albeit heartbreaking, story of how a man vanished. The case took a significant turn six months later with a somber discovery. The remains of Bradshaw's companion, identified as Gary Krueger, were found in Lake Washington. Krueger was a former police officer with a history of criminal activity, including bank robbery. This discovery began to unravel the simple story of a boating mishap, revealing a more complex and troubling sequence of events that had transpired on the night of March 26th. Investigators started to piece together a puzzle that connected the disappearance of the two men to a criminal act that had occurred just hours before they are believed to have entered the water. It was revealed that on the same night Bradshaw and Krueger disappeared, there was a botched home invasion in Kirkland. The two men had attempted to accost an orthopedic surgeon and his son outside their home. A struggle ensued, and the two assailants fled, leaving behind a ski mask. DNA from the mask would later identify John Alan Bradshaw as one of the perpetrators. The small boat that Bradshaw and Krueger used, which ultimately capsized, had been stolen from the very home they had attempted to invade. This evidence suggested that their frantic escape from the failed crime led them onto the unpredictable waters of Lake Washington, where their boat foundered. While Krueger's fate is known, John Alan Bradshaw has never been recovered. The investigation into his disappearance remains open, a story that began as a suspected maritime accident but evolved into the final chapter of a bungled crime, leaving a lasting mystery in the depths of the lake.
