On a rainy November morning in 2008, 13-year-old Austin Fuda was a passenger in a car traveling alongside the Green River in Auburn, Washington. It was the last time he was seen. The vehicle, driven by his sixteen-year-old stepsister, carried not only Austin but also his two-year-old cousin, Hunter Beaupre. The weather had made the roads slick, and a tragic turn of events caused the car to lose control, plunging down an embankment and into the cold, fast-moving waters of the river. Austin was a student who was known for his big heart and love for his family and animals. He enjoyed a variety of activities including surfing, football, video games, and fishing. The moments following the crash were chaotic and desperate. Austin's stepsister managed to escape the submerged vehicle and swim to safety, but she was tragically unable to rescue the two young boys still inside. The river, swollen and swift from the rain, quickly engulfed the car. An extensive search and rescue operation was launched in the hopes of finding Austin and Hunter. A few days later, divers were able to locate and retrieve the Volkswagen from the river. Inside, they found the body of little Hunter, still secured in his car seat. However, there was no sign of Austin. Despite exhaustive efforts, he was never located and is presumed to have been swept away by the current. In the years that followed, the Fuda family grappled with the immense loss and the unanswered questions surrounding that devastating day. In 2012, Austin's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Auburn and King County, alleging that the road's design and maintenance were negligent and contributed to the accident. The lawsuit claimed the road was deceptively designed and poorly maintained. Ultimately, a jury found that King County was not negligent in the design of the road. The case of Austin Fuda is a heartbreaking story of a young life cut short by a tragic accident. Despite the passage of time, his remains have never been recovered, leaving his family with a profound and lasting sense of loss. He is remembered by his family as a hero who passed away while trying to save his young cousin.
