On a summer afternoon, August 26, 1971, thirteen-year-old Kevin Conner and his ten-year-old friend, Mark Peal, were on a camping trip with their families at the Agate-Crescent Beach Recreational Area in Port Angeles, Washington. Filled with youthful curiosity, the two boys set out from their campsite to explore some abandoned World War II bunkers located nearby. It was the last time they were ever seen. Their families' vacation turned into a desperate search as the afternoon faded and the boys did not come back. An extensive and thorough search was launched in the hours and days that followed their disappearance. Hopeful at first, searchers, including a volunteer force of 450 GIs from Fort Lewis, scoured the area around Agate Beach and the old military fortifications. Investigators discovered two sets of shoe prints that the boys' parents confirmed matched the footwear their sons were wearing. A sheriff's department bloodhound was brought in and followed a scent trail from the boys' tent to a log that extended over the water at the edge of the peninsula between the two beaches, prompting a search of the nearby kelp beds by a dive team. Despite these efforts, no trace of Kevin or Mark was found. While authorities did not rule out the possibility of foul play, they stated there was no evidence to suggest it had occurred. As days turned into weeks with no sign of the boys, the official ground and air search was eventually called off. In September of 1971, the heartbroken families of Kevin and Mark held a memorial service for them, though they have never been found. The disappearance of Kevin Conner and Mark Peal has remained an enduring mystery in Clallam County. The case is a sorrowful story of a summer adventure that ended in tragedy and unanswered questions. The boys, on the verge of starting new school years, simply vanished, leaving behind only memories and a lingering sense of loss for their families and community. The prevailing belief is that they likely became lost or were injured while exploring the dangerous and unstable environment of the old bunkers.
