On the morning of April 8, 2011, 33-year-old Robert Lee Hourihan left his home in Palmyra, Virginia, dressed in his work uniform. He told his wife he was heading to his electrician job in Richmond, but he was not actually scheduled to work that day. Instead of taking his usual route, he drove in a different direction. Hourihan was last seen at approximately 8:00 a.m. at the E.W. Thomas Grocery Store in Palmyra, where he stopped for breakfast. He was driving his wife's white 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier which had a vanity license plate that read "TARAMAE". At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing blue work pants, a gray work shirt, and boots. Hourihan has a serious heart condition that requires daily medication, which he reportedly did not take with him. The investigation into Robert Hourihan's disappearance took a significant turn on May 28, 2011, fifty days after he was last seen. His wife's Chevrolet Cavalier was discovered abandoned in the parking lot of a Target store in La Plata, Maryland, about 115 miles from his home. Inside the vehicle were some of his personal belongings, including his work shirt and electrician tools, with no apparent signs of a struggle or crime. Authorities were unable to retrieve any useful surveillance footage from the Target parking lot as it had been recorded over by the time the car was found. The reason for Hourihan's presence in Maryland remains a mystery to his family, as they have stated they have no known connections to the area. Years have passed since Robert Hourihan vanished, and his case remains an active and unsolved investigation, with law enforcement suspecting foul play. Investigators believe it is likely that more than one person was involved in his disappearance and that he probably knew his assailant(s). It was later revealed that Hourihan had plans to meet with a male acquaintance on the day he went missing, but he never arrived for the meeting. His wife does not believe he would have voluntarily left his family, particularly his young daughter. The Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office continues to seek information from the public that could bring closure to Hourihan's loved ones. The case is a perplexing one, marked by a loving family man who seemingly deviated from his normal routine for unknown reasons, leading to a decade-long mystery. His disappearance left a void in the lives of his family, who continue to hope for answers.
