Kayla Mae Croft-Payne, an 18-year-old female, was last seen in the Vader, Washington area and was reported missing on May 5, 2010. A friend, who had not seen or heard from her in several days, filed the report with the Lewis County Sheriff's Office. At the time of her disappearance, Croft-Payne was living a transient lifestyle in the Chehalis area. The last confirmed activity from her was a login to her MySpace account on April 28, 2010. She was known to frequent areas in Lewis, Grays Harbor, and Pierce counties. Friends and family grew increasingly concerned for her safety due to her lifestyle, which included struggles with drug addiction. The investigation into Kayla's disappearance was extensive, with law enforcement initially dedicating all available detectives to follow up on leads. Over the years, numerous tips and theories emerged. One such tip led investigators to a property near Winlock, Washington, referred to as "The Farm," where it was rumored her body had been thrown down a well. After a thorough two-day search, which included draining a 35-foot well and excavating another, the search only uncovered a dog carcass. Another theory explored the possibility that her interest in online modeling may have led to her disappearance, but this lead also proved to be a dead end. The investigation also involved cadaver dogs searching in the Toutle area of Cowlitz County early on, but that search was also unsuccessful. In November 2015, a significant development in the case was announced by investigators from the Lewis and Cowlitz county sheriff's offices. They had received new and credible information from multiple witnesses suggesting that Kayla had died of an accidental drug overdose in an RV park in northern Cowlitz County shortly after she was reported missing. The investigation was subsequently transferred to the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office. The information further indicated that her body was then transported to a remote, heavily wooded area in Oregon and concealed. Detectives believe they have identified the individuals who disposed of her body, but have stated they are not currently seeking criminal charges, their primary goal being the recovery of her remains to bring closure to her family. Despite multiple extensive searches in Oregon, her remains have not been found. The case remains an active investigation, with authorities still hoping that someone with information will come forward to help locate her.
