In the early hours of May 16, 2009, 48-year-old Hattie Gertrude Brown, an Army veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm, vanished from South Boston, Virginia. She was last seen on surveillance footage at a Sheetz gas station at the intersection of Route 501 and Route 58 at approximately 2:33 a.m. Hattie was with her adult nephew, Derek Edward Brown, whom she had picked up from the gas station. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a sleeveless top and pants with side stripes. Hattie, a Black female with brown eyes and black, shoulder-length hair, stood 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighed around 155 pounds. She had a noticeable scar on her abdomen. The circumstances surrounding Hattie's disappearance quickly raised alarms among her family and law enforcement. She had left her home without her purse, her cherished Chihuahua, and critical medication she required. Her family was adamant that she would not have left voluntarily, describing her behavior as uncharacteristic. The last known sighting of Hattie was when she dropped her nephew off at a party and was seen idling in her car outside. Her nephew made it home safely, but Hattie and her silver 2003 Volkswagen Jetta were gone. Two months later, in July 2009, her vehicle was discovered abandoned and completely destroyed by fire on a remote farm in southeastern Halifax County, about 12 miles from where she was last seen. The location where the car was found suggested that someone with local knowledge was involved, as they would have known the farm was a place where the car would not be discovered for some time. The investigation into Hattie Brown's disappearance is ongoing and is being treated as a homicide. Though her remains have never been found, authorities suspect foul play. Her nephew, Derek, was publicly named a person of interest in the case, though he has never been charged. Over the years, law enforcement has conducted numerous interviews and searches, including dives in the Hyco River, in an effort to find her. The case is a profound and enduring tragedy for her family, who have spent years waiting for answers. Compounding their grief, Hattie's brother, James Brown Jr., also went missing from a nearby town in 2013, though investigators do not believe the cases are connected. Hattie's financial accounts have remained untouched since she vanished, and her family continues to hope for closure.
