In the spring of 2009, 21-year-old Alyssa Angelique McLemore was living in Kent, Washington, balancing life as a young mother to her three-year-old daughter and as a devoted caretaker for her own mother, Gracie, who was gravely ill with scleroderma. On the evening of April 9, 2009, Alyssa's grandmother called to tell her that her mother's condition had taken a turn for the worse. Alyssa, a member of the Aleut tribe, promised she was on her way home, a promise her family clings to as it was the last time they would ever speak with her. It was completely out of character for Alyssa, who was deeply connected to her family, to be out of contact, and her failure to return home that night marked the beginning of a long and painful search for answers. Her family insists she would never have willingly left her child or her dying mother. The day after Alyssa vanished, the case took an even more sinister turn. On the evening of April 10, police arrived at the family's home, not with news of Alyssa, but with a deeply unsettling development. A frantic, 10-second 911 call had been made from Alyssa's cell phone at approximately 9:15 p.m. On the brief recording, a woman's voice could be heard pleading for help before the line went dead. A transcript of the call later revealed that a male voice was also heard in the background, saying something threatening like "I'll hurt you" or "I'll kill you." Because her Blackberry phone lacked GPS technology, authorities were unable to pinpoint the exact location of the call, though they believe it originated somewhere in the Kent area. A few days later, the phone went out of service. Tragically, just three days after Alyssa disappeared and before her family could reach her with the news, her mother passed away. The investigation into Alyssa's disappearance has been fraught with limited leads and years of heartache for her family. Witnesses reported seeing Alyssa near 30th Avenue South and Kent-Des Moines Road on the day she went missing. She was reportedly seen being approached by or getting into a green 1990s model pickup truck, possibly with Oregon license plates. One witness described a man seen with Alyssa as a Caucasian male in his 50s or 60s. Despite these fragments of information, her whereabouts remain a mystery. Her family has worked tirelessly to keep her story in the public eye, conducting their own searches and advocating for justice. The case is an open and active investigation, but for over a decade, the disappearance of Alyssa McLemore has remained unsolved, a painful illustration of a young woman who vanished after a desperate call for help, leaving a daughter to grow up without her mother and a family still waiting for closure.
