In the autumn of 2007, a 29-year-old woman named Rita Marie Kowalski vanished from her life in Battle Creek, Michigan, leaving behind a family searching for answers. The last confirmed contact with Rita was on October 15, 2007, when she spoke with her mother by phone but would not disclose her location. At the time of her disappearance, Rita, a white female with blonde hair and blue eyes, was living with her grandmother in the Wattles Park area. She stood at 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed around 216 pounds. Distinctive features included a piercing in her lower lip and a tattoo of her first name, "Rita," on the back of her neck. She was known to sometimes use the alias Brandy Hough or spell her middle name as "Maria". The circumstances leading up to Rita's disappearance began to unfold more than a year before her last phone call. In September 2006, Rita was reportedly last seen in person by a friend. The friend had intended to drive her to a drug rehabilitation center in Grand Rapids, as Rita had a history of addiction. However, Rita first asked to stop at a relative's house in Battle Creek. After the visit, she informed her friend that she had changed her mind about going to rehab. Shortly after this incident, on September 26, 2006, the Michigan Department of Corrections officially listed her as a parole absconder. Despite this, she seemingly remained in some contact with her family, culminating in the final phone call to her mother in October of the following year. The investigation into Rita's disappearance faced significant delays. Her mother, who resided in the western United States, did not formally report her missing to the Emmett Township Department of Public Safety until 2011, several years after the last contact. This considerable gap in time has complicated the efforts to uncover her whereabouts. To date, little information has surfaced regarding what happened to Rita after that final phone call. Her case is classified as an endangered missing person case and remains unsolved, a lingering story of a woman who was grappling with personal challenges before she disappeared. The lack of progress and the vagueness of the circumstances surrounding her last known activities present an ongoing mystery for law enforcement and a source of continuing pain for her family, who are left to wonder what became of Rita Marie Kowalski.
