In the autumn of 1981, a 24-year-old nurse named Kathryn "Kathy" Gregory disappeared from Spokane, Washington, leaving behind a life that seemed full of promise. Also known by her maiden name, Kathryn Rahe, she was a dedicated and gifted student who was pursuing another degree while working at a local hospital. She had been married for eighteen months and lived with her husband in Spokane. Accounts of her last known whereabouts vary slightly. Her husband reported last seeing her on the morning of November 4, 1981, after they had returned from a shopping trip. He stated he left for work around 11:20 a.m. However, other sources and multiple people report the last confirmed sighting of Kathryn was on the evening of November 3, 1981, when she attended a graduate-level statistics class. Concern for her well-being grew when she uncharacteristically failed to show up for her 2:00 p.m. nursing shift on November 4th. She was not officially reported as a missing person to the Spokane Police Department until the following morning. The initial investigation into Kathryn's disappearance uncovered few leads, adding to the mystery and distress of her loved ones. A significant and unsettling discovery was her car, which was found parked on a street two blocks away from her home, a location considered unusual for her. At the time she went missing, it is believed she may have been wearing a green and orange ski coat, a brown sweater with green and brown horizontal stripes, and blue jeans. She may have also been wearing wooden sandals with a flower on the toe strap and her gold wedding ring with a diamond, while carrying a wine-colored clutch purse. Kathryn was a woman with dark brown, shoulder-length hair that was often wavy and parted on the side; she frequently adorned it with flowers. Distinctive features included a mole on her left wrist and a bulbous nose. Years have passed without any resolution, and Kathryn Gregory's case remains an unsolved and open investigation with the Spokane Police Department. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance. In the face of this enduring uncertainty, her family and friends took action, raising money for a reward and even hiring a private investigator to aid in the search efforts. Her loved ones believe she is deceased, though her body has never been recovered. In her memory, Kathryn's family established the Kathy Rahe Memorial Scholarship Fund to support undergraduate nursing students, a testament to the compassionate and ambitious woman she was. The case is a somber reminder of a young life interrupted, leaving a family without answers and a community with a lingering sense of loss. The investigation has spanned decades, yet the central questions of what happened to Kathryn and who might be responsible remain unanswered.
