In the winter of 2007, a promising 17-year-old girl named Danica Childs vanished from Federal Way, Washington, leaving her family heartbroken and searching for answers. On December 21st, Danica, a biracial female with brown hair and brown eyes, spoke to her mother on the phone, detailing her plans to go Christmas shopping with her sisters and friends. That phone call was the last time her family would ever hear from her. At the time of her disappearance, Danica was described as being 5'2" to 5'3" tall and weighing between 80 and 107 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black sweater jacket with a fur hood, a Mickey Mouse t-shirt, blue jeans, and black suede boots. Danica has several piercings, including her ears, navel, and nose, and may go by the nicknames "Neek" or "Neeka." The days following Danica's disappearance brought a series of disturbing discoveries for her family. Her purse, coat, and cell phone were found at the Sunset Motel in Kent, Washington, a location known for drug and prostitution activity. It was later revealed that Danica had spent the night there before she went missing. After her mother managed to access her phone, a collection of messages unveiled a secret life Danica had been living; the messages indicated her involvement in sex work, a reality her family was completely unaware of. Further investigation by her mother uncovered that a man Danica had been dating, whom she met while in a dual enrollment program, was a pimp. It is believed that this relationship is what led Danica into the world of sex work. While authorities initially considered the possibility that Danica left of her own accord and might be in the company of an adult male, her family strongly believes she was a victim of human trafficking and is being held against her will. The timeline of the messages on her phone suggests that she may have disappeared shortly after her last conversation with her mother. Despite the passage of time, Danica's family has not given up hope. Her mother, Dianne Zoro, became an anti-trafficking advocate, co-founding the Federal Way Coalition Against Trafficking in her daughter's honor. The case of Danica Childs is a tragic story that sheds light on the horrific reality of human trafficking. A once academically gifted student who was on track to graduate, Danica's life took a dark turn after she became involved with a man who exploited her. Her disappearance serves as a painful reminder of the dangers that can lie beneath the surface of what appears to be a normal teenage life, leaving a family to grapple with unanswered questions and an ache for a daughter who has been missing for years.
