In the summer of 2002, a six-year-old boy named Logan Lynn Tucker vanished from his home in Woodward, Oklahoma. He was last seen on June 23, 2002, a date that marks the beginning of a deeply troubling case that would eventually be classified as a homicide, even without the recovery of his body. At the time of his disappearance, Logan was living with his mother, Katherine Rutan, his younger brother, and a roommate named Melody Lennington. Prior to his disappearance, there were signs of a volatile home environment. The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) had previously taken custody of Logan and his brother after their mother threatened to harm them, though they were returned to her care shortly after. Just days before he went missing, his mother had contacted OKDHS, expressing a desire to relinquish her parental rights to both of her sons. She was reportedly angered that the agency could not take them immediately. The circumstances surrounding the night Logan was last seen are harrowing. The family's roommate, Melody Lennington, reported being awakened by the sound of Logan screaming and crying between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. on June 23. When she inquired about Logan later that morning, his mother claimed he was sick and had been put in the basement. Katherine Rutan's stories about Logan's whereabouts soon began to shift, telling some that OKDHS had taken him, he was with his father, or that he was in a psychiatric hospital. It was Logan's maternal grandparents who officially reported him missing on July 7, after receiving evasive answers from his mother about his location. When questioned by police, Rutan gave conflicting accounts, claiming Logan was with an uncle in a state where the uncle did not reside. She never actively participated in any searches for her son. The investigation uncovered disturbing details, largely from the testimony of Logan's younger brother. He recounted to FBI agents a chilling story of his mother taking him and Logan out to the country. He described Logan as pale and hunched over in the back seat. According to the brother's account, his mother had a shovel and plastic, stating she was going "to bury Logan." He said she then took Logan into a field and returned to the car alone. A search of the family's apartment revealed blood stains and masking tape with hair attached to it in the basement. Despite extensive searches in Woodward County and near Fort Supply Lake, Logan's remains have never been found. In September 2007, Katherine Rutan was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of her son and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case remains a tragic story of a young boy lost, with his final resting place unknown.
