In the late summer of 1984, seventeen-year-old Sandy Pathresa Rea was navigating the complexities of adolescence in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Described as mature for her age, she had recently moved out of her mother's home and was living with a friend's family, supporting herself with jobs at local restaurants. Despite this independence, Sandy remained a constant in her family's life, frequently visiting her mother and younger siblings, for whom she was considered a "second mother". On the evening of September 19, 1984, Sandy left her friend's house with the intention of walking to a nearby convenience store to buy cigarettes. Along the way, a group of friends spotted her and gave her a ride to the Windsor Bowling Alley, where her cousin was working. At the time of her disappearance, Sandy was 17 years old, a student at Shawnee High School, and the president of the Vocational Industrial Club of America. She was last seen wearing a gray cropped shirt with the initials "SHS," pink jogging pants, and flip-flops. Sandy has brown hair and brown eyes, with distinctive freckles and a right ear that is smaller than her left and bends downward at the top. At the bowling alley, Sandy spoke with her cousin and asked for a ride, but he was unable to leave his job. She then made a series of phone calls, presumably to find a ride to a party she had mentioned wanting to attend. Around 8:30 or 9:00 p.m., Sandy was seen leaving the bowling alley; however, who she left with remains a mystery. She had a known habit of hitchhiking and accepting rides from strangers, which has complicated the investigation into her disappearance. When Sandy failed to return to her friend's house, leaving all her belongings behind, including her purse, her mother grew deeply concerned and reported her missing to the Shawnee Police Department. Initially, law enforcement treated her case as a runaway, a theory her mother vehemently disputed, stating that it was entirely out of character for Sandy not to be in contact with her family, especially her younger siblings. It wasn't until months later, in January 1985, after Sandy had turned 18, that authorities began to reconsider the runaway theory and reclassified her as a missing adult. Over the decades, the investigation into Sandy Rea's disappearance has been fraught with challenges and unverified leads. Numerous individuals have been interviewed, and various theories have been explored, though none have led to a resolution. One theory considered the involvement of an ex-boyfriend with whom she had a tumultuous relationship, while another speculated that she may have died of an accidental drug overdose at a party, with her body being disposed of afterward. There were also rumors of so-called "suit parties" involving influential local men and underage girls, but no concrete evidence has ever linked Sandy to these events. Over the years, law enforcement has received tips, including one in 2013 that led to an unsuccessful excavation near some railroad tracks in search of her remains. The case has passed through the hands of multiple detectives, each working to uncover the truth of what happened that September night. Despite the passage of time, the case officially remains an endangered missing person investigation, a painful and unresolved chapter in the lives of her loved ones and the community of Shawnee.
