In the early morning hours of New Year's Day 1984, 24-year-old Samuel "Sam" Arthur Todd, a student at Yale Divinity School, vanished from the bustling streets of Manhattan. He and his younger brother had been enjoying a series of New Year's Eve parties, with their final stop at the Puck Building in the SoHo district. Between 1:00 and 2:00 a.m., feeling the effects of the celebration, Sam decided to step outside for some fresh air and a short jog to clear his head. He was last seen walking near the corner of Mulberry and Houston Streets, having left his wallet, identification, and jacket behind at the party. The temperature that night was cold, ranging from 17 to 37 degrees Fahrenheit, making his lack of a coat particularly concerning. The hours turned into a day, and with no sign of Sam, his family reported him missing. A massive search effort was quickly organized, with over 200 volunteers, many of them Sam's classmates from Vassar College and Yale, combing the streets of New York City for any trace of the missing student. Despite their exhaustive efforts, no sign of him was found. Investigators considered the possibility that he may have been the victim of an assault, perhaps struck on the head, which could have resulted in amnesia. This theory was bolstered by a couple of unconfirmed sightings in the days following his disappearance. An employee at a men's shelter in the Bowery reported seeing a man matching Sam's description who had a meal there, and another witness claimed to have seen a similar-looking individual washing car windows in Greenwich Village. As years turned into decades, the disappearance of Samuel Todd became one of New York's most baffling and enduring missing person cases. While he was a promising student on the path to becoming a Presbyterian minister, there were underlying struggles in his life. He was facing financial difficulties and was having trouble with some of his courses at Yale. He had also recently ended a relationship with his girlfriend, who was present at the same New Year's Eve party. These factors led to speculation about whether he might have intentionally disappeared to start a new life. However, his family remained steadfast in their belief that he would not have voluntarily left without a word.
