On a fall day in Norman, Oklahoma, sixteen-year-old Josephine Yvette Cogburn and her fifteen-year-old sister, Joyce Irene Cogburn, disappeared. The date was October 2, 1983, and the sisters were living with a male family friend who had been granted their temporary custody. He was the one who reported them missing, claiming they had gone to the library and never came back. Initially, their case was treated as a runaway situation, but this theory was questioned as the girls had left all of their personal belongings behind. Neither their friends nor classmates had heard from them, deepening the mystery surrounding their sudden vanishing. The girls had a turbulent upbringing. Their father died in a car accident in 1968, and their mother, who was pregnant with Joyce at the time, struggled to raise her three daughters alone. The sisters were separated for a time, with Josephine and Joyce living with their paternal grandparents. They were reunited with their mother in 1975 after she remarried, but this new family arrangement was short-lived due to allegations that their stepfather had tried to molest the younger girls. In 1983, after experiencing some disciplinary issues at home in Broken Bow, Josephine and Joyce went to live with the family friend in Norman. Their older sister was also invited to live with him but declined the offer. The man who had custody of the sisters has been considered a person of interest in their disappearance. Their older sister believes he may have been responsible for what happened to them. She recalled Josephine confiding in her that Joyce had been in a relationship with the man but had recently ended it for a new boyfriend. After the girls vanished, the man reportedly cut off all contact with their family and refused to return their personal items, including clothes and photo albums. He has since passed away, and the apartment where he lived with the girls has been demolished. Over the years, there have been several unconfirmed sightings of the sisters, but none have been substantiated, leaving their case unsolved. The disappearance of Josephine and Joyce Cogburn remains a haunting case, with foul play suspected by investigators as time has passed without any word from the sisters.
