In the spring of 1981, nineteen-year-old Tammy Mahoney was living in Oneida, New York, with her boyfriend and had dreams of becoming a veterinarian. A Long Island native, she had attended the State University of New York at Morrisville the previous year to study animal husbandry. On the morning of May 8, 1981, Tammy was last seen hitchhiking on Route 46, a common practice for her to get to her job as a groom at Vernon Downs or to visit friends. She had quit her job a week prior but had not told her boyfriend, leaving their apartment each morning as if going to work. That particular day, she was reportedly trying to get to the nearby town of Hamilton. Her boyfriend reported her missing on May 11, three days after she was last seen. While she had disappeared before, she had always returned. This time, however, she would not, leaving behind all of her belongings, which were packed for an upcoming move. Authorities believe that on the night she vanished, Tammy was picked up by a group of young men and taken to a party in a trailer on the Oneida Indian Nation Territory. It is there that investigators suspect she was gang-raped and murdered. The investigation into her disappearance was complex from the start. Five months passed before police even learned that she had been on the Indian Territory. The jurisdictional nature of the case, with the crime believed to have occurred on sovereign land, meant that the federal government would ultimately have to prosecute any charges. Despite numerous searches over the years, including a 2016 search of a wooded area and digs on other properties, her remains have never been found. The lack of a body has been a significant hurdle, preventing prosecutors from filing charges even though they have identified several suspects. Over the decades, the case has seen periods of renewed focus and public appeals for information. Law enforcement officials have identified numerous persons of interest and believe that many individuals who were at the party that night hold the key to solving the case. A significant clue emerged when a wallet was anonymously turned in to the police a week after Tammy disappeared; authorities believe its owner was with her on the night she vanished. In 2020, the FBI publicly appealed for the person who turned in the wallet to come forward, believing they might have crucial information. Both the FBI and the Oneida Indian Nation have offered substantial rewards for information that leads to the recovery of her body and the prosecution of those responsible. Despite witnesses coming forward over the years, a wall of silence has largely hampered the investigation. The case remains an open wound for Tammy's family and the community, a haunting story of a young life cut short and a search for justice that has spanned more than four decades.
