On the evening of September 30, 2008, 35-year-old Kellisue Ackernecht completed her shift as a supervisor at a Rite Aid in Amsterdam, New York, and began her drive home to nearby Johnstown. She was last seen leaving her workplace around 9:45 p.m. in her dark green 1998 Saturn sedan. At the time of her disappearance, Kellisue was wearing tan pants with a black patch on the back, a black shirt, a Rite Aid apron, and new white and pink sneakers. She also wore glasses, a wedding band, earrings, and two necklaces, one of which had three diamonds. Hours later, in the early morning of October 1, 2008, Kellisue's car was discovered engulfed in flames just a few blocks from her residence in an area known as Frog Hollow. The location of the vehicle was not on her usual route home. The fire completely destroyed the car, and there was no trace of Kellisue at the scene. An initial belief that the fire was an act of arson has been reconsidered, with the possibility of an accidental fire due to known radiator problems with the vehicle. Neighbors reported hearing what they thought were gunshots in the area around midnight, prior to the discovery of the burning car. Kellisue was a dedicated mother to her eight-year-old daughter and was actively involved in her school's PTA and cheerleading activities. While she was reportedly experiencing some troubles in her marriage, her family firmly believes she would never have voluntarily left her child. The investigation into her disappearance has been ongoing, with Johnstown Police following up on numerous leads over the years, including searches of wooded areas with K-9 units and state police helicopters. In early 2025, authorities executed a search warrant at a Johnstown apartment where a person of interest in her case had lived at the time she went missing. Despite these efforts, Kellisue's case remains unsolved, and what happened to her after she left work that night is still a mystery.
