Investigators learned that her cell phone had last pinged a tower near her house on September 12, after which it went silent. The man found at the residence, identified as Donald Lee Hassler, was later arrested. It was discovered that he had allegedly forged the deed to Sheryl's property. Her children subsequently filed a lawsuit to reclaim ownership of their mother's home. As the search for Sheryl intensified, the investigation pointed towards a grim outcome. Law enforcement officials publicly stated they suspected foul play and were investigating her disappearance as a possible murder. The search efforts involved the use of cadaver dogs on her property and sonar equipment in the nearby Horseshoe Lake, as authorities diligently worked to find answers. Tragically, the case of the missing grandmother concluded with the confirmation that she was deceased, bringing a sorrowful end to the search for Sheryl Odell.
