On a spring afternoon, March 11, 1987, 18-year-old Kimberly Kay Kersey, a senior at Mountain View High School, began her two-mile walk home in the Hearthwood area of Vancouver, Washington, a journey she would never complete. That day, school had let out a bit early, and Kimberly had plans to attend a basketball tournament in Tacoma with her boyfriend later. She was last seen wearing a white sweatshirt with "University of Paris" printed in blue, pink, and yellow, a pink turtleneck, light blue jeans, and white Keds sneakers. Kimberly was also wearing a dental retainer for her top teeth and had pierced ears. Her walk home was a familiar routine, often taking a path north across Mill Plain Boulevard, just east of what was then Evergreen Airport. Although she sometimes got a ride from her father or a friend, on this particular day, she set out on foot. The following day, when Kimberly failed to return home, her family's concern grew into a desperate search. It was her own mother who made a heartbreaking discovery in a wooded area not far from their residence, a path Kimberly often used as a shortcut. Strewn about were Kimberly's schoolbooks and papers, a tangible and chilling sign that her journey had been violently interrupted. Several pages from one of her notebooks appeared to have been torn out. This discovery confirmed the family's worst fears and immediately led investigators to suspect foul play was involved in her disappearance. The community was shaken by the vanishing of the bright high school senior, a case that would continue to haunt the area for decades to come. Over the years, the investigation into Kimberly Kersey's disappearance has remained active, though unsolved. Authorities have publicly identified at least two primary persons of interest. One was Russell Francis Stenger, a man who was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of another woman who disappeared under similar circumstances in the same area. The other was a man with a history of child molestation who lived just two blocks from where Kimberly is believed to have been taken. Despite these leads, no definitive evidence has emerged to officially link either individual to her case. Tragically, both of Kimberly's parents passed away without ever knowing what happened to their daughter. Her younger siblings, however, continue to hold out hope that one day they will have answers, and the long-standing mystery of what happened to Kimberly Kay Kersey on her walk home from school will finally be resolved.
