In the late summer of 2023, concern grew for a 16-year-old female, Alyssa Herrera, from Austin, Texas. She was last seen in her hometown on September 7, 2023. At the time of her disappearance, Alyssa was described as having brown, waist-length hair, and brown eyes. Distinctive features included a scar on her upper lip and a piercing on the right side of her nose. She may have been wearing white low-top Nike shoes and a gold bracelet with her name on it. Alyssa's mother, Cyndi Roman, reported that she had confronted Alyssa about skipping classes at her new public school on September 6th. Alyssa had been homeschooled the previous year and had promised to attend classes regularly. The day after the confrontation, Alyssa left their home in the afternoon and did not return. The situation was especially painful as Alyssa's 16th birthday passed just a week after she went missing. Her mother believed she was initially with a boy from school, but communication with her daughter, even through a friend, ceased about a week into her disappearance. The Austin Police Department was notified and began an investigation into Alyssa's disappearance. Her mother made heartfelt public pleas for her safe return, expressing her love and worry. She believed her daughter was still in the South Austin area. Fortunately, this distressing period came to an end when Alyssa's mother confirmed in early October 2023 that her daughter had been found and was expected to be okay. This brought a conclusion to what had been classified as an endangered runaway case.
