In the spring of 1977, a 19-year-old college student named Judith Anne Brown vanished from Queens, New York. At the time of her disappearance on or around April 6, 1977, she was a patient at the Hillside Medical Center, receiving outpatient services. Judith, who went by Judy, was a bright and popular young woman studying psychology. She had recently been voluntarily admitted to Creedmoor Psychiatric Center after experiencing a mental health crisis. It was during her brief stay at Creedmoor that she met Richard E. Reisenberg, another patient. Their meeting would ultimately lead to her disappearance. Judith and Richard began a relationship while they were both patients at their respective hospitals. In January 1977, as Judith was transitioning to an outpatient program, Richard proposed marriage, and she accepted. However, Richard had a dark and violent past that Judith's family was unaware of at the time. In 1971, he had killed his wife and their 17-month-old son. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 1973 and was subsequently committed to Creedmoor. Despite his history, Reisenberg was known to leave the hospital grounds on unauthorized trips. Just before Judith's disappearance, a ward supervisor had recommended Richard be transferred to a maximum-security hospital. Before the transfer could be enacted, Richard Reisenberg walked away from Creedmoor, and Judith disappeared with him. While some family members believe the last time they saw Judith was April 13, 1977, when she visited with Richard to retrieve some of her belongings, she has not been seen or heard from since. The focus of the initial investigation appeared to be on locating Reisenberg, with Judith's disappearance receiving less attention. Years later, it was reported that Reisenberg had contacted his attorney about turning himself in and claimed to be in California, but he made no mention of Judith's whereabouts. The case of Judith Anne Brown's disappearance is a troubling one, leaving her family with unanswered questions for decades. The circumstances surrounding her vanishing with a man with a history of extreme violence have led to grave concerns for her safety and well-being. Younger generations of her family have since taken up the cause, seeking answers and keeping her memory alive in the hopes of one day learning what happened to her.
