On a summer day in July of 1972, 15-year-old Kathy Sue Wilcox, a female from Otsego, Michigan, had a heated argument with her father and stepmother. The disagreement, reportedly about her dating an 18-year-old, escalated to the point where her stepmother slapped her. Angered and upset, Kathy stormed out of her family's home on West Franklin Street, leaving all her money and personal belongings behind. As she left, she reportedly said, "I will never see you again." At the time of her disappearance, she was described as being 5'4" tall and weighing 130 pounds, with shoulder-length brown hair and blue-gray eyes. She was last seen wearing blue jeans and a purple shirt. A distinctive physical feature noted was a hooked fingernail on one of her index fingers. In the initial days and weeks following Kathy's departure, her family and community held out hope for her return. Neighbors recalled seeing her father sitting in a folding chair in the front yard, waiting for her. Initially, her case was classified as a runaway, a common occurrence for teenagers at the time, and the investigation did not gain much traction. However, as days turned into weeks, and weeks into years with no word from Kathy, the belief that she had simply run away began to fade. Her sister, Karen, has expressed that for years she blamed herself for the argument that preceded her sister's disappearance. Over time, the family's hope of a voluntary return has diminished, replaced by the fear that something tragic happened to her. Decades have passed since Kathy Sue Wilcox was last seen, and her case remains one of Michigan's longest-running missing person investigations. Despite the passage of time, her family, particularly her sister, has continued to search for answers. Law enforcement, now with the Allegan County Cold Case Unit, still seeks information that could shed light on what happened to the young girl who vanished after a family dispute. Friends from her childhood remember her as "fiery" and "tomboyish," yet with a "soft and kind heart." The case is a somber reminder of the enduring pain and uncertainty that families of the missing face. The central mystery of whether Kathy successfully started a new life or met with foul play continues to haunt her loved ones and the community of Otsego.
