In the early evening of December 2, 2005, 19-year-old Larry Stackhouse, Jr. left his family’s home on Lynn Circle in Syracuse, New York. He was on his way to a Christian Brothers Academy high school basketball game with friends, a typical Friday night for a young man. Dressed in a long-sleeved white t-shirt with a short-sleeved black t-shirt over it, blue jeans, and Timberland boots, Larry departed from his residence around 6:30 p.m. When his parents awoke the following morning, they discovered that their son had not returned home. After he failed to make contact, they reported him missing, unknowingly beginning a search for answers that would span years. The initial account of Larry's whereabouts that night came from a friend who claimed he had dropped Larry off at a store near his house after the game. However, this story soon changed. The friend later stated that Larry had been involved in an altercation at the basketball game. This inconsistency was an early indication that the circumstances of his disappearance were complex and troubling. Investigators learned that Larry may have been seen in a green, four-door 2003 Hyundai that evening. Though authorities looked into this lead, the vehicle did not provide the answers needed to locate him. The conflicting stories from those last to see him created a cloud of uncertainty that has persisted throughout the investigation. Over the years, the absence of concrete evidence has been filled with persistent rumors, many suggesting that Larry was killed and his body was hidden on the nearby Onondaga Indian Nation territory. Law enforcement has explored these and other tips, but has never found credible evidence to substantiate the claims or to indicate that Larry is deceased. At the time he vanished, Larry was a father to a young daughter, worked at a nursing home, and had plans to earn his GED. While he had a couple of outstanding misdemeanor warrants, investigators do not believe they were a factor in his disappearance. His case is considered suspicious, and despite the passage of time, it remains an unsolved and active investigation. Larry Stackhouse, Jr.'s disappearance is a painful mystery, defined by a friend's evolving story, troubling rumors, and a family left waiting for the truth.
