The investigation into Annie's disappearance soon focused on her home life. Those who knew her described her as a loving sister and a hard worker who was cherished by many. However, troubling details emerged regarding her husband, Thomas Horne. He had been a person of interest in her case for a long time and was known to have a jealous nature. He told investigators that just a week before she went missing, he had suggested they separate. Thomas Horne also gave police a strange account of the night before her disappearance, claiming Annie woke up "gasping for breath" and that he had to give her "mouth-to-mouth" before she went back to sleep.
