On the evening of November 7, 1997, 36-year-old Camden Sylvia and her 54-year-old boyfriend, Michael Sullivan, were last seen jogging near their home in the vicinity of Pearl Street and Hanover Square in Manhattan, New York. A creative artist who had moved to New York City after high school, Camden worked in a real estate office to support her passion for painting and creating art from found objects. She and Michael, an actor, lived together in a rent-controlled loft apartment on Pearl Street, for which they paid only $300 a month. The couple, known for their simple and happy life, frequently went for runs together. On the day of their disappearance, they had rented a movie, and the receipt, found later in their apartment, indicated they were at a video store around 4:00 p.m. After returning home, it is believed they left for their customary jog, but they never returned. Concerns grew when days passed with no word from either Camden or Michael. When Camden's mother entered their loft, she found everything seemingly in order, suggesting they had intended to be back shortly. Their passports, Michael's wallet, and keys were left on the kitchen table alongside a rental video. The only items noted to be missing were two pairs of running shoes, a single set of house keys, and a bag Camden used for work. An investigation into their disappearance soon uncovered a contentious dispute the couple was having with their landlord, Robert "Bob" Rodriguez. The tenants of the building at 76 Pearl Street were reportedly dealing with a lack of heat, and Rodriguez had allegedly threatened to keep it off if they did not agree to a significant rent increase. On the very day they vanished, Camden had presented Rodriguez with a petition signed by the tenants, stating their intention to withhold rent if the heat was not turned on. Suspicion quickly fell upon the landlord, Robert Rodriguez, who had a locksmith shop on the ground floor of the building. Investigators theorized that the dispute over the rent-controlled apartment, which could have been rented for ten times the amount, may have been a motive. Shortly after the couple was reported missing, Rodriguez himself disappeared for two weeks without explanation. Upon his return to Manhattan, he hired an attorney and refused to cooperate with the police investigation. Authorities conducted extensive searches for the couple, including in the Hudson River, but found no evidence of their whereabouts. Rodriguez was later arrested and sentenced to prison on unrelated charges of larceny, tax fraud, and credit card fraud. He has since been released and maintains his innocence in the disappearances of Camden Sylvia and Michael Sullivan. The case grew cold over the years and was eventually turned over to the NYPD's cold case squad. Despite pleas from family and investigators on the 25th anniversary of their disappearance, no new leads have brought resolution. The disappearance of Camden Sylvia and Michael Sullivan remains an unsolved mystery, leaving their loved ones without answers.
