On an autumn evening in 1993, 35-year-old William David Dudley, known to his friends and family as Bill, disappeared from Winchester, Virginia. The last time anyone saw him was on October 31, 1993, at a property on Martinsburg Pike where he lived in a trailer. This property also housed his girlfriend, Cindy Benner, their daughter, and Cindy's grandmother in the main house. Bill, described as a kind person and a good worker when sober, had been struggling with alcohol during this period of his life. He was a father of four, having three children from a previous marriage and one with Cindy. Standing between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches tall with dark blond hair and blue eyes, Bill was a notable presence. He wore eyeglasses and had a distinctive tattoo of a cougar on his right upper arm. The night of his disappearance was filled with turmoil. Bill had been drinking with two other men earlier in the evening. Around 9:30 p.m., he called his girlfriend, and despite her request for him to stay in his trailer due to his intoxicated state, he went to the main house. An argument between the couple escalated, and Bill struck Cindy, fracturing her nose. The commotion awoke Cindy's grandmother and their daughter. Two men who had been with Bill earlier, identified as one of Cindy's relatives, Roger Benner Jr., and his friend, Glen Kerns, heard the disturbance and intervened. The confrontation moved outside, where a physical fight ensued, during which Kerns struck Bill with a baseball bat. After the fight subsided, Bill reportedly calmed down, apologized to Cindy, and was last seen stumbling back towards his trailer. He has not been seen or heard from since. In the days that followed, concern for Bill's welfare began to grow. Cindy checked his trailer and found his wallet, keys, and other personal belongings left behind. While Bill had a history of leaving for short periods, he would always contact his mother. When weeks passed with no word, his mother's worry intensified. She and Cindy put up missing person posters in local bars before officially reporting him missing on December 5, 1993. Investigators interviewed the individuals involved in the altercation, and while their stories were consistent, no charges have ever been filed due to a lack of evidence. Authorities suspect foul play was involved in his disappearance. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office continues to list the case as an open investigation. Despite the passage of time, the case of William Dudley remains an unsolved mystery, leaving his family without answers about the fate of their loved one.
