On the night of January 2nd, the 23-year-old, who was originally from North Carolina, attended a small party with friends in an apartment on East 7th Street in Manhattan. Sometime after midnight, Vernon reportedly began to feel unwell. He decided to leave the gathering to return to his own apartment on the Upper West Side, but he would never make it home. At the time he was last seen, he was wearing a tan jacket over a red and gray sweater, blue jeans, and brown hiking boots. Worryingly, he had left his wallet and personal identification behind in his apartment, meaning he was without any means of identifying himself as he stepped out into the city night. The circumstances surrounding the moment Vernon Jones left the party remain clouded by confusion. According to statements from the few people who were with him, two of them left the apartment to go to a nearby store. When they came back a short time later, Vernon was gone. Another individual at the party recalled hearing the apartment door close and simply assumed that Vernon had stepped out for some fresh air. No one actually saw him leave the building. In a significant step for the investigation, the family provided one of Vernon's baby teeth, which allowed for his DNA to be entered into the national CODIS database, a crucial tool for identifying unknown remains.
