On a spring evening in 1988, 18-year-old Cassandra Lee Hailey went on her first date with a fellow Christopher Newport College student, 20-year-old Richard "Keith" Call. On April 9th, Keith picked Cassandra up from her family's home in Grafton, Virginia, in his red 1982 Toyota Celica. The new couple planned to spend the day together, culminating in a party at the University Square Apartments in Newport News. They were last seen at this party in the early morning hours of April 10th. After that, neither Cassandra nor Keith were ever seen or heard from again. The following morning, Keith's car was found abandoned at the York River Overlook on the Colonial Parkway in Yorktown. The discovery was unsettling. The driver's side door was open, and inside, the scene was peculiar; the keys were on the driver's seat, and a watch and eyeglasses were left on the dashboard. In the backseat, investigators found most of the clothing the couple had been wearing. Cassandra's purse was also in the car, though her wallet was missing, and Keith's wallet was found with about $12 in cash inside. An initial theory that the couple might have gone for a swim and drowned was considered, but the frigid water temperatures that night and Cassandra's known fear of water made this unlikely. An extensive search of the river yielded no signs of them. The absence of any clear motive, such as robbery, and the strange state of the vehicle led authorities to suspect foul play. The disappearance of Cassandra Hailey and Keith Call is often linked to a series of unsolved murders that occurred in the same area between 1986 and 1989, known as the "Colonial Parkway Murders." During this time, the bodies of three other young couples were discovered in or near the Colonial Parkway, a 23-mile scenic roadway. In each of these cases, the victims' cars were found abandoned with their possessions largely untouched, a disturbing parallel to Cassandra and Keith's case. However, Cassandra and Keith are the only victims whose bodies have never been found, leaving their families with a profound and unending sense of loss. Investigators have long theorized that a serial killer may have been responsible, possibly someone who impersonated a law enforcement officer to gain the victims' trust. Despite decades of investigation and the identification of potential suspects, the case remains cold, and the families continue to hope for answers that might one day bring their loved ones home.
