In the summer of 2023, a 45-year-old woman named Nanci Leigh Britner disappeared from Winchester, Virginia, leaving her family and friends deeply concerned. On June 28th, she delivered a box of food to her sister, who was undergoing cancer treatments and living at the Relax Inn. Nanci spent time with her sister and also visited with her daughter who lived in the same building as her own apartment. As the evening progressed, Nanci began making calls around 11 p.m., seeking a ride back to her residence on North Kent Street. Her sister went to sleep, and when she awoke, Nanci was gone, leading to the assumption that she had found a way home. That was the last time she was seen. The hours following her last known appearance at the Relax Inn are a critical part of the investigation. Just after midnight on June 29, 2023, Nanci spoke with her fiancé, who was at work, and also texted her niece to ask for a ride. She was eager to get home as she was expecting a visit from her adult son and his children the next day, whom she hadn't seen in nearly a year. When her niece's reply went unanswered, it was assumed she had secured another ride. However, Nanci never made it home. Both of her prepaid cell phones were turned off, though one was tracked to an undisclosed location in Frederick County before it was powered down. Her disappearance was out of character for the devoted mother of four and grandmother to thirteen, who was described by her family as a "homebody" with no history of leaving without notice. The investigation into Nanci's disappearance has been extensive, with the Winchester Police Department and the Frederick County Sheriff's Office following up on over a hundred leads. Searches have been conducted at various locations, including homeless camps, with the use of cadaver dogs, but no significant breakthroughs have been announced. Nanci was last seen wearing a black sleeveless tank top, denim shorts, and black and gold sandals, and she was carrying a purple tagalong suitcase. She has several distinctive tattoos, including a large black cross on her left shoulder, and tattoos on her neck, feet, and forearm. Her family believes she accepted a ride from someone she knew. Despite the passage of time, the case remains unsolved, leaving a void in the lives of her loved ones who continue to hope for answers. The circumstances surrounding her vanishing remain unclear, and authorities continue to seek any information that could lead to her whereabouts.
