The keys to the truck were also missing. The circumstances surrounding Ballard's disappearance sparked an immediate and thorough search. Law enforcement was able to initially track his phone, with pings indicating someone was moving on foot in an area north of Douglassville. This led to searches by both law enforcement and concerned volunteers. A game warden with a tracking dog was brought to the scene to try and pick up his scent from the truck. In a perplexing turn of events, after the authorities had processed the vehicle, Ballard's wife discovered his phone sitting on the truck's console. Despite these efforts, which included searching bodies of water, no trace of Larry Ballard, Jr. has been found.
