In the winter of 2023, a 33-year-old man named Rakim Celestine vanished from Dallas, Texas. He was last in contact with his family on February 4, 2023. Originally from Lafayette, Louisiana, Rakim had moved to North Texas against his mother's wishes, but he made a point to call her regularly. This consistent communication suddenly ceased, causing immediate concern for his mother, Eva. Her worries intensified after receiving a troubling call from one of Rakim's friends. This prompted her to travel to Dallas, where she filed a missing person report with the Dallas Police Department on February 13, 2023. Rakim was described as a Black male, standing 6 feet tall and weighing around 175 pounds, with black, medium-length hair that may have been in dreadlocks and a distinct brown streak. The circumstances surrounding Rakim's disappearance are complex and troubling. Shortly before he went missing, he had reportedly received a significant cash settlement from a lawsuit involving men who had allegedly assaulted and stolen from him. Along with Rakim, both of his vehicles were also missing, including a black 2007 Dodge Nitro. His mother, with the help of a friend in IT, was able to ping his cell phone on February 23, and it registered a location just outside of San Antonio. In a distressing turn, his mother also reported receiving a ransom demand for over $2,300 from an individual claiming her son was alive, a demand she refused to meet. The Dallas Police Department's Missing Persons division is handling the investigation, which they have classified as a "want to talk to" case, as there was no initial evidence of foul play. Rakim was known in the local music scene as a rapper who went by the name "Mr. Celestine Mafia," and some friends in Dallas knew him as "Lafayette." His mother has expressed her fear that his edgy persona and the nature of his music might have led law enforcement to not take his disappearance as seriously as they should. In the months following his disappearance, his mother has made heartfelt public pleas for any information that could lead to answers about her son's whereabouts. A community gathering was even held in his hometown of Lafayette to bring awareness to his and other missing person cases. The case remains an active investigation, a painful and unresolved chapter for a family waiting for any news of their loved one.
