In the fall of 2021, 78-year-old Duane Miles, a lifelong resident of Forks, Washington, and an experienced outdoorsman, disappeared while on a day hike in the familiar terrain of Olympic National Park. The last verbal contact anyone had with him was on October 18, 2021. He was seen the following day, October 19, driving his vehicle near Kalaloch, heading towards the Graves Creek area of the park. Miles, who was known for often hiking off-trail by himself to search for elk antlers, had planned a day trip to hike south of the Graves Creek Campground. He was approximately 5'9" tall, weighed 185 pounds, and had blue eyes. When he was last seen, he was wearing black rain pants and a camouflage jacket and was believed to be carrying a dark-colored backpack. After he failed to return, his family reported him missing on Saturday, October 23, 2021. His vehicle was subsequently found parked at the Graves Creek Campground, confirming his arrival at his intended starting point. This discovery prompted the immediate launch of a search and rescue operation led by the Olympic National Park service. The initial search efforts were intensive, involving numerous personnel, dog teams, and aircraft that scoured the rugged landscape and river corridors. Over the course of the active search, ground teams dedicated more than 2,000 hours to finding any sign of the missing hiker. Despite the extensive and exhaustive search, which at one point involved over 30 personnel from various rescue groups, no significant leads emerged. A single potential clue, a recently opened sardine can, was found, but it did not lead to a breakthrough in the case. On November 1, 2021, the search was officially scaled back to a "limited continuous mode." This meant that while large-scale daily searches would cease, park personnel would continue to patrol the area and investigate any new information that came to light. The case of Duane Miles remains an unresolved and poignant mystery, a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the wilderness, even for a seasoned and skilled hiker intimately familiar with its terrain. His son later wrote that while his father went missing, he didn't believe he got lost, but that something else prevented him from walking out of the wilderness that day.
