On June 17, 2016, 52-year-old Floyd E. Roberts III went missing in a remote area of the western Grand Canyon. An experienced hiker, Roberts was on a planned nine-day trek with a friend and his daughter on the Shivwits Plateau when he became separated from them. The group encountered a hill, and while his companions went up and over it, Roberts chose to contour around it, with an agreement to meet on the other side. He was never seen again.
