Born in El Paso, Texas, on August 10, 1953, Jones had a deep connection with the ocean, having moved to the Monterey area with his family in 1962. His life was interwoven with the sea, from working on the wharf in Monterey at a young age to becoming a commercial fisherman for over three decades. He held a skipper's license and was a familiar face at the helm of the Princess Monterey.
